Purchasing the RHL
The online version of RHL is available from only £47 (GBP). Order online now or contact Update Software (sales@update.co.uk) for details. There is no charge for access in less developed countries.

How do I search RHL? (TOP)
The "search" box is at the bottom of the left hand column on every page of RHL. You can search for a single word, or for a phrase, or for a combinations of terms. You should note that videos and PowerPoint presentations are not included in the results when you use the "Search" feature. These documents can be accessed via the Resources page.

  • To search for a single word, type the word in the search box and click on Search now.
  • When searching for a phrase, make sure that you put inverted commas around the phrase. If you do not do so, the search will act as though the word AND has been included between the words: see below.
(For example, "antibiotic regimen", rather than antibiotic regimen).
  • You can use the wild-card character * to search for words beginning with the same letters
(For example, neonat* will find words such as "neonate", "neonates" or "neonatal").
  • You can combine terms using the words OR or AND.
    • Use OR to look for documents containing any one of a number of terms
(For example, clindamycin or gentamycin or penicillin or antibiotic* will find articles containing at least one of those words).
    • Use AND to look for documents containing each one of the terms chosen. If AND is omitted, the search will act as though it had been included.
(For example, antibiotic* and infection* will only find articles containing both those words, as will antibiotic* infection*).

What can I find in RHL? (TOP)
In the column headed About The RHL, on the right-hand side of the home page, you will find links to documents describing the content of RHL, the editorial structure of the Library, and information on accessing the Library.

How do I interpret the results of a search? (TOP)
Most documents in RHL10 are grouped into "packages" of related documents on a single topic. The search results page lists the title of each "package" found, along with a brief summary of the content of the package. Beneath this text, you will find links to the different documents making up the "package"; most commonly, these will include a Cochrane Review, an RHL Commentary or an RHL Practical Aspects. Click on the link to view the document.

The search results page displays up to 10 packages corresponding to the search term. If the search finds more than 10 packages, these are displayed on successive pages. You can view these successive pages by clicking on the page numbers at the bottom of the search results page.

If the search term occurs in the package summary, it will be highlighted.

The search results are ranked in order of relevance. "Relevance" reflects the number of times that the search terms occur in the documents.

I'm having difficulties viewing a PowerPoint presentation (TOP)
There are some PowerPoint presentations in RHL. To view these presentations, you must have Microsoft PowerPoint or Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer on your computer. If you do not have either of these, you can download Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer here. (CD-ROM users: you will need a live internet link to access this website).

(Internet user only: this paragraph does not apply if you are using the CD-ROM version of RHL10). Some of the PowerPoint presentations in RHL10 are quite large. If your computer seems to take a long time to open these presentations, you may prefer to download them to your computer before opening them. To do this, move the cursor over the link to the PowerPoint file, click the right-hand button on your mouse, and click on the Save Target As... option in the menu that appears. A "Save as" window will open; choose the location on your computer to which to want to save the file, and click Save. You can then open that file on your computer.

I'm having difficulties opening a PDF file (TOP)
Some documents in RHL10 are in the PDF format. To view these documents, you must have Adobe Reader on your computer. If you do not have Adobe Reader, you can download it here. (CD-ROM users: you will need a live Internet link to access this website).

I'm having difficulties viewing a video (TOP)
The videos in RHL10 are set up to use Microsoft Windows Media Player. You may have difficulty if another media player is installed on your computer. You can make Windows Media Player your default media player by following these steps:

  • In Windows Media Player, click Tools, and then click Options
  • On the Formats tab, under Available File Formats, click Select All to select all of the file formats listed. Alternatively, you can click to select each individual tick-box
  • Click Apply, and then click OK

If you do not want to use the Select All option, you should at least tick the Movie File (MPEG) option. If the tick-box appears grey, double-click the box.

Click here to obtain more information on making Windows Media Player your default player. (CD-ROM users: you will need a live Internet link to access this website).
